A referral from a general practitioner (GP) enables you to claim a portion of the consultation fee from Medicare. This referral is valid for 12 months. A referral from another specialist is accepted and this is valid for only 3 months. You can make an appointment without a referral HOWEVER you will not be able to claim a medicare rebate for the consultation fee.
We are happy to see all Workers Compensation and Third Party claim patients. If you wish your insurer to be billed directly, you must provide a letter of approval from your insurer at your first appointment. In the absence of a letter of approval from the insurance company, workers compensation and third-party fees are to be paid on the day by the patient.
Very often during the course of your evaluation or treatment for an orthopaedic condition we will require x-rays to determine the cause of a problem or to evaluate your progress.
Please dress so that the body part you are having trouble with can be easily examined and/or X-rayed. For example, please wear shorts if you are attending for a knee problem.
Our surgeons’ fees are guided by the Australian Medical Association recommended fee. This means that in most instances there will be a part of your surgical fee which will not be covered by Medicare and your health fund. It is important that you ask about this gap. Our staff are fully informed with changes and rebates and will be able to help you.
Payment at the time of the consultation is appreciated. Bank checks, personal checks, cash or credit cards (MasterCard, VISA) are accepted.
You do not need private health insurance to see the surgeons at SOTRS.
Our surgeons are able to provide services in the public hospital system as well as the private hospital system. Having private health insurance ensures that the surgeon of your choice will perform your operation. It also will help fund the hospital and anaesthetic charges and will likely allow a shorter waiting time.
Non insured patients can be placed on a waiting list at Sutherland Hospital, Westmead Hospital, Dubbo Base Hospital or Moree Hospital. There is generally a 6-12 month wait for non-urgent procedures and as these hospitals are teaching hospitals, your surgery may be performed by the training registrar under the supervision of your treating orthopaedic surgeon. Alternatively, non insured patients can elect to have their surgery performed in the private hospital. They will need to cover all the hospital and surgical costs prior to hospital admission.
